Healthy gums and good oral hygiene are necessary foundations for all healthy mouths. Visiting the hygienist regularly can help to prevent gum disease, which causes bleeding gums, sore gums, bad breath, and loose teeth. Gum disease can be treated, stopped and even reversed if caught in its early stages. Your Hygienist will not only treat and prevent gum disease, but will give you the control to prevent it yourself at home with a better oral hygiene routine.
What will happen at my hygiene appointment?
Your dental hygienist will assess your current gum health, perform a thorough cleaning, including plaque removal (soft deposits of bacteria and food), calculus removal (hard plaque) and stain removal (stain removal only for private appointments). They will then discuss how you take care of your teeth at home and suggest ways you can improve your oral hygiene.
Can the dentist perform hygiene services?
Some dentists will do this type of work themselves. However, many realise that the hygienist has been specially trained to carry out scaling and polishing and can spend longer with you. Hygienists are also expert at teaching you how to look after your teeth and gums.
Does hygiene treatment hurt?
Normally a scale and polish is pain free, but if you do experience any discomfort, the hygienist can give you some local anaesthetic. You can let the hygienist know if you are uncomfortable at any time during the procedure so they can help to minimise any pain
